On behalf of the TUMI Network, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability organized the webinar:
Improving the walkability of African cities
on Thursday 31 January 2019 from 15:00 – 16:30 (GMT+2).
This is the first in a series of webinars that explores topics of relevance to the mobility challenges and opportunities of African cities and beyond.
Approximately half of daily commutes in African cities are on foot, but pedestrians often put their lives at risk by sharing the road with cars in the absence of dedicated Non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure. In this TUMI Network’s webinar, we discussed walking as an important mode of transport for safer, healthier, more accessible and more sustainable African cities.
The webinar moderated by Blake Robinson of ICLEI, and featured speakers include:
- Stefanie Holzwarth, UN-Habitat: Designing streets for safety, accessibility and comfort in African cities
- Sean Cooke, University of Cape Town: The return on investments in NMT
- Diana Odero, UN Environment: Implementing NMT policy with innovative financing
- Amanda Ngabirano, Makerere University, The neglected popular mode: beyond infrastructure
Participants had the opportunity to get updated from experts and asked burning questions related to their city, and shared information about resources, upcoming events, and interesting African initiatives with the group.
