Event Details

The annual Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Expo is a flagship event held under the aegis of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. The event is inaugurated by Hon’ble Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs. The genesis of UMI is from the National Urban Transport Policy of the Government of India, 2006 (NUTP), which lays a very strong emphasis on building capabilities at the State and city level to address the problems associated with urban transport and undertake the task of developing sustainable urban transport systems. The event essentially has four components as below:

Conference 

The primary objective of the conference is to disseminate information to the cities, whose officials attend the conference, and to help them keep up-to-date with best urban transport practices. The conference provides an opportunity for key decision makers and delegates to interact with other professionals, experts, academia, industry, civil society, technology, services providers and other stake holders in Urban Transport both domestic and international so that the delegates can carry home ideas to develop their urban transport along a sustainable path. It is also a forum to discuss key issues relevant to the sector and suggest measures to address them.

Exhibition

The expo is a special feature of UMI to disseminate and showcase the latest developments in urban transport technology and systems, implementation of best transport projects, propagation of innovative ideas, good urban transport initiatives and practices in the field. The best two exhibitors are selected by a jury for award.

ResearchSymposium

The symposium provides a platform to highlight the current research carried out by academia and research institutes in urban transport, especially by young researchers pursuing post graduation or Ph.D. programs. The best three research projects are selected by a jury for award.

Awards for Excellence in Urban Transport

Awards are also presented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to best urban transport projects / initiatives selected by an Award Selection Committee in the following six categories:

  • Best Non-motorized project
  • Best city bus service project
  • Best urban Mass transit project
  • Best intelligent transport system
  • Best initiative on improved road safety
  • Best city in urban transport initiative

INSTITUTE OF URBAN TRANSPORT (INDIA) was established in May, 1997 as a premier professional non-profit making organization and registered under the Societies Registration Act. The members of the Institute comprises of Academicians, Architects, Economists, Engineers, Transport Planners, Town Planners and professionals from various disciplines. The Institute has at present 67 institutional members and 1600 individual members. The Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, is the ex-officio President of the Institute and its Governing Council has members from various premier organizations connected with Urban Transport. The main activities of IUT are clubbed into 5 heads as follows: Technical Support Policy, Research & Projects Training and capacity building Publication Information and Library The Institute has Regional Chapters at Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kanpur, Kashipur, Mumbai, Shibpur, Silchar, Srinagar, Surat, Trivandrum and Warangal. It is managing a Knowledge Management Centre (KMC) established by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India (GoI), to compile a reliable and comprehensive database for proper planning and policy making at the government level as also in the conduct of meaningful research. The Institute is striving to serve as a storehouse of information on urban transport and act as a comprehensive repository of the best practices in the field. The Institute, with the active support and guidance of the MoHUA, GoI has been actively involved in a variety of professional activities to promote and develop the state-of-the-art Urban Transport in the country. The National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) issued by Government of India in April 2006, empowered IUT to serve as a National Level Facility for continuous advice and guidance on the principles of sustainable urban transport. Responsibilities includes technical assistance to the Ministry, state governments, urban local bodies, appraisal of urban transport projects, capacity building program, creating a knowledge management center to build up a database, research, preparation of toolkits, training and skill development of public officials.
