Institute of Urban Transport (India)
INSTITUTE OF URBAN TRANSPORT (INDIA) was established in May, 1997 as a premier professional non-profit making organization and registered under the Societies Registration Act. The members of the Institute comprises of Academicians, Architects, Economists, Engineers, Transport Planners, Town Planners and professionals from various disciplines. The Institute has at present 67 institutional members and 1600 individual members. The Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, is the ex-officio President of the Institute and its Governing Council has members from various premier organizations connected with Urban Transport. The main activities of IUT are clubbed into 5 heads as follows: Technical Support Policy, Research & Projects Training and capacity building Publication Information and Library The Institute has Regional Chapters at Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kanpur, Kashipur, Mumbai, Shibpur, Silchar, Srinagar, Surat, Trivandrum and Warangal. It is managing a Knowledge Management Centre (KMC) established by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India (GoI), to compile a reliable and comprehensive database for proper planning and policy making at the government level as also in the conduct of meaningful research. The Institute is striving to serve as a storehouse of information on urban transport and act as a comprehensive repository of the best practices in the field. The Institute, with the active support and guidance of the MoHUA, GoI has been actively involved in a variety of professional activities to promote and develop the state-of-the-art Urban Transport in the country. The National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) issued by Government of India in April 2006, empowered IUT to serve as a National Level Facility for continuous advice and guidance on the principles of sustainable urban transport. Responsibilities includes technical assistance to the Ministry, state governments, urban local bodies, appraisal of urban transport projects, capacity building program, creating a knowledge management center to build up a database, research, preparation of toolkits, training and skill development of public officials.
