Invited by ICLEI and GIZ, 19 cities from the African continent participated in the 2-day kick-off event on the TUMI Network of High Ambition Leaders. Hosted by the city of Tshwane – a sustainable mobility pioneer – representatives spent an intensive two day workshop to develop solutions specifically for urban mobility challenges in Africa. Lessons learned include closer engagement of decision-makers, advancement of integrated fare solutions and closer attention to new digital solutions from the continent to help cities champion their mobility. 

Key messages of the kick-off meeting were brought by the Mayor of Quelimane, Mozambique, Manuel de Araujo to the UN Climate Conference COP 24 in Katowice in December 2018. At the official TUMI side event at the German Pavillion, Mobility transition in our cities: Prioritising people – decarbonising transport, Mayor Araujo presented the challenges for sustainable transport for African cities and expressed the ambition to become the cycling capital of Africa.
