Cities learning from cities

The TUMI E-Bus Mission City Network is a learning network of cities committed to accelerating the transition toward e-bus fleets within public transport systems in global South cities. Through the network, members benefit from shared knowledge and resources relating to the transition toward e-bus fleets, including exclusive trainings, peer-to-peer exchanges, and more.

The network, starting with an initial group of 50+ cities and counting, aims to champion good practices for the transition to e- buses and set an example for the incoming members. By 2022 we aim to inspire 100+ cities to become part of the network and reach 500+ cities by 2025.

Funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), a core group of organizations, The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, Local Governments for Sustainability, C40 Cities, The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and The World Resources Institute (WRI) works together to accelerate the transition to electric buses in the Global South.

The TUMI E-Bus Mission aims to contribute significantly to the goal of creating sustainable urban transport systems. Air and noise pollution are among the most pressing problems in today’s cities. TUMI E-Bus Mission not only works to reduce these problems, but also strongly cuts down CO2-emissions created by urban transport systems. The TUMI E-Bus Mission cities serve as role model cases for successful and largescale e-bus adoption in other cities.

Within the TUMI E-Bus Mission there are two programs: the 20 Deep Dive Cities Program and the TUMI E-Bus Mission City Network.

The 20 Deep Dive Cities Program – is a group of cities that have been selected, based on a set of criteria concerning the readiness, the potential for GHG mitigation, and the sphere of influence, to receive support for developing and implementing individual e-bus roadmaps.

The TUMI E-Bus Mission City Network – led by ICLEI and UITP, is a learning network of cities, but committed to exploring and/or accelerating the transition toward e-bus fleets within public transport systems. Through the network, members benefit from shared knowledge and resources relating to the transition toward e-bus fleets, including exclusive trainings, peer-to-peer exchanges, and more.

The network, starting with an initial group of 50+ cities and counting, aims to champion good practices for the transition to e-buses and set an example for the incoming members. By 2022 we aim to inspire 100+ cities to become part of the network and reach 500+ cities by 2025.

Creating sustainable urban transport systems together:

Today, air and noise pollution are among the most pressing problems in cities. Most public buses across the world are diesel-fueled, and a large part of GHG emissions and air pollutants come from urban bus fleets. The TUMI E-Bus Mission and network aim to contribute to reducing these problems and cut down on emissions created by urban transport systems. Our network serves as platform for cities to share their experiences and work towards creating more sustainable urban transport systems.
