Background
Do you want to know how to cope with increasing mobility needs in rapidly growing cities? Or how you can preserve the quality of life in compact cities and reduce congestion and air pollution? Do you want to make your transport system more resilient and more sustainable? During our International Summer School we will engage with you in different approaches for transport planning, city planning or technical development to tackle these questions.
Objective and Content
From the 5th to the 11th of August the Technical University of Dresden organizes jointly with the City of Leipzig, the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) and the EcoMobility Alliance the 2nd International Summer School “Sustainable Mobility – Made in Leipzig”, an international seminar about “Sustainable Mobility Planning”.
Agenda
The schedule contains lectures of research results, methods and best practice examples, public evening classes and several field trips. Additionally it invites active participation in a studio based design class to tackle urban and transport challenges in and with the partner City of Leipzig. The design results will be presented on 10th of August and during the European Mobility Week from 16th till 22nd of September, 2018 in Leipzig.
Lectures and Workshops
During the International Summer School 2018 different topics of sustainable mobility and urban development will be presented and discussed. The inputs will be presented from the Universities of Dresden, Trier and Vienna and international speakers from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), C40 Finance Facility (CFF) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Additionally, urban practitioners from Durban (South Africa), Santiago de Chile (Chile), Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg (Russia)and Lviv (Ukraine) will present their personal experiences in the field of sustainable mobility.
Besides the lectures the following workshops will be offered (click below to see detailed agenda for each workshop):
1. The new role for the Promenadenring in 2030
2. Participation in the planning process
3. Pedestrianization of cities for the future
4. Bicycle planning in cities
The local input will be provided by the City of Leipzig, including site visits by foot and on bike. A copy of the sustainable travel guide for Leipzig will be presented by GIZ and is also available for download under: https://www.german-sustainable-mobility.de/
Financial Support
The International Summer School is free of charge. For participants from Central and Eastern Europe, there will be the possibility to apply for a (partial) refund for accommodation and travelling expenses. In addition, a limited number of participants from developing and emerging countries can apply for funding of travel costs by TUMI Initiative.
The International Summer School encourages applications from PhD-students, postgraduates, academically qualified specialists and professionals of the following fields of activity:

• Street Construction and Design
• Urban Planning and Design
• Landscape and Open Space Architecture
• Architecture
• Regional Planners
• Urban Economics
• Urban Sociology
• Transport Psychology
• Geography
Organisers
The Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) enables leaders in developing countries and emerging economies to create sustainable urban mobility. It offers technical and financial support for innovative ideas. In TUMI the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has brought together some of the world’s leading institutions working on sustainable mobility with city networks and think tanks to implement projects on site where they are needed most.
Partners include ADB, CAF, WRI, ITDP, UN-Habitat, SLoCaT, ICLEI, GIZ, KfW and C40. A transition towards sustainable urban mobility requires a shift in policy making and investment decisions. TUMI will support projects, leadership development and career building for urban leaders, decision-makers, planners and students; ultimately connecting 1000 leaders worldwide. We believe in capacity building, mobilization of investments and supporting approaches on the ground as the most effective measures to follow the set goals and achieving a more sustainable urban future.

Luke Nadal
Luke Nadal
Technical Director, Institute for Transportation & Development Policy
Luke has led ITDP’s global urban development program since its inception in 2005. The program’s primary objective is to support governments worldwide in the creation of vibrant, sustainable, equitable cities with walking- and cycling-friendly public spaces and efficient transit.
Luc has contributed to many successful program initiatives: historic urban center revitalization in Brazil and Mexico; public space upgrades along BRT corridors in China; and transit-oriented planning in China, India, Brazil, and Mexico. In Mexico City, Luc’s recommendations led to the construction of a BRT line linking the historic center to the airport. In downtown Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Luc oversaw planning for a pedestrian-transit mall—a car-free street design that integrates walking and cycling facilities and a BRT corridor—which went on to be constructed in 2016 and is believed to be the first of its kind in Africa.
Luc is the lead author of ITDP’s TOD Standard—a tool that supports good practice in transit-oriented development. The standard has had notable success in international policy: new development regulations in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the states of Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu, India, reflect the standard’s objectives, and the Netherlands’ most populous province, South Holland, references the standard for use in development planning and review.
A former practicing architect, Luc holds a doctorate (with distinction) and a master of philosophy in urban planning, both from Columbia University, as well as an architect diploma from École d’Architecture de Paris La Villette. He has taught at Columbia University, New School University, and Parsons School of Design and has written extensively about urban public space planning, design, history, and meaning.
